During the Research Training Program, 'New Frontiers in Ocean Exploration 2010' of Universities and Institutes of: Institute for Exploration (IFE), Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), University of Rhode Island (URI) and Center for Ocean Exploration and Archaeological Oceanography (COEAO) in collaboration with the Department of Geology and Geo-Environment, University of Athens and the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral will be held oceanographic research in the submarine area east of the volcanic complex of Santorini with E/V Exploration Vessel 'Nautilus' from 29 July to 12 August 2010 and in the submarine area of Nissiros from 3 to 8 October.
On behalf of the University of Athens is responsible oceanographer Dr. Paraskevi Nomikou who participated in previous research oceanographic ships in May-June 2006 with the E/V ship 'AEGAEO', of HCMR exploring the marine area of Santorini volcano in collaboration with foreign scientists. Scientific Coordinator of the project are Prof. Steve Carey, Prof. Robert Ballard and Drs Katherine Croff Bell.
E/V boat 'Nautilus' of O.E.T. is equipped with remote-controlled underwater robots (ROVs): Hercules, Argus, Diana and Echo, which will explore the submarine volcano Columbo and east slopes of the volcano of Santorini, the submarine landslides south of Nissiros and the comtinuity of the volcanoc islands (Stroggili, Pahia and Pergousa) in seabed. The boat is also equipped with a high bandwidth satellite system on board for the duration of the cruise tofacilitate remote science and education via the Inner Space Center (ISC) in the URI Graduate School of Oceanography and Exploration. There is on-line access to oceanographic research in the webpage www.nautiluslive.org, where watching the processes on board and participating in discussions and researchers questioning are already available.
'Nautilus' was launched on June 12 and runs until October 20 by investigating the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, which are of biological and geological interest, together with National Geographic.
