In 1995 Pyrgos was declared a "preserved monument". Thanks to its 600 residents it remains vibrant and full of life throughout the year.
The main attraction is the Kasteli (castle). Visitors also explore the cobbled streets with the Cycladic and the neoclassical buildings, enjoy the sunset over the Caldera from the top of the castle, visit the Ecclesiastical Collection in Aghia Triada and the Cultural Village "Santorini of the past". There are hotels, restaurants, taverns, cafes and traditional "kafeneia", mini markets, shops.
The village is surrounded by whitewashed churches and vineyards full of the characteristic basket shaped Santorinian vines. High up, on the top of the mountain, there is Prophet Elias monastery.
Trekkers will find amazing natural beauty around Pyrgos. Among others there is the old Medieval path that leads from Pyrgos to Emporeio village (1 hour and 30 minutes).

  • Near the settlement there are Chatzidakis winery and Santo Wines.
  • Since the summer of 2012, Pyrgos has its own worldwide free iPad application in Apple's App Store with an initiative of the Estia Pyrgou Kallistis Association and the collaboration of the businesses of the settlement. It is in English and contains rich material in texts, photos that were created especially for the application as well as videos and information on hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops etc.
  • Information about Pyrgos you can also find in the Estia of Pyrgos web site
  • Founded in 1949, the Estia Pyrgou Kallistis Association was the first culture association to be established in Santorini. It has been active in all cultural sectors and has engaged in social action as well. Pyrgos, capital of the former Kallisti Municipality until 1912, was a lively community, and the past continues to enrich the Association's prolific activity. Estia objectives include creating an association-owned foundation, organising and operating a lounge, establishing and operating a library and reading room for the public, organising lectures as well as art and entertainment events (such as theatre and dance shows, showing children's movies, etc.), financing and awarding school students with outstanding records, organising fun and educational trips, and improve the Pyrgos District with infrastructure work.
