Settlement Karterados is surprising for its particular architecture. Located near the center of the island, 1.5 kilometre southeast of Fira, on the public road to Messaria. The old village is full of cave houses (dug-in buildings). The houses are built within a stream so that their roofs are at the same level with the road. According to the census of 2001 has 1,089 residents. The name of the village comes from the word “karteri” (lurking-place), probably because at old times "karteri" against pirates used to take place.
